Bailey Middle School Grading Policy - Grades are posted through PowerSchool and are usually entered in a week after they are turned in. There are two types of grades students can receive throughout the year: Informal and Formal.
Informal: Classwork, Homework, and Quizzes are classified as Informal. These grades are worth 35% of a student's grade.
Formal: Tests, Projects, and Post-Assessments are classified as Formal. These grades are worth 65% of a students grade. A project can only be counted as a Formal grade if all subject specific teachers (e.g. all Science teachers) assign it. A grade of 50% will be issued as the lowest score possible on any formal assessment or project. However, a zero will be given if the student does not complete an assessment or turn in a project.
Tests - Tests are given every 2-4 weeks. Tests are usually multiple choice, matching with visuals, and possibly short answer.
Retakes: Students are given a chance to retake Tests. If a student scores less than an 80% on a Test, they can opt to retake it and score up to an 80%. It is the responsibility of the student to ask for a pass to come to working lunch on the specified date given by the teacher Student must do some sort of remediation before attempting the retest. The type of remediation will be determined by the teacher. The student must complete their study guide and the remediation in order to take the retake. If you do not have these items completed by the the retake date, you will not be eligible.
Quizzes - Quizzes cannot be retaken. If absent the day of the quiz, the grade will be exempt.
Homework - Homework is always due the day after it is assigned unless otherwise instructed. When homework is given, the assignment must be 100% completed to recieve credit.. If homework is not 100% completed when checked the next day (e.g. missing 1 question out of 25), the student will be given a 0 and the homework will be considered 'late'.
Late Assignments: The highest a student can make when an assignment is not entirely completed and submitted is a 80%. If an assignment is not turned in on the due date, the assignment will automatically be reduced to 80%. Each additional day late will result in an 8 point reduction. Once two weeks have elapsed since the due date, the assignment will be an irreversible 0%.
Classwork - Classwork is a worksheet, group work (labs, posters, foldables), Friday quizzes, and participation. Students who fail to participate in class will be given a 0% on any assignment from that day without the ability to make it up.
Make-Ups - Students who are absent have two days for each day absent to make up any assignment which it is possible for them to make up. It is the responsibility of the student to gather, complete, and submit all make up assignments. Students should check the website calendar for what they missed while absent. Assignments such as video notes, and labs are difficult to make up due to the necessity of being in class to complete it. In this situation, students will be given an 'exempt' grade in PowerSchool. An 'exempt' grade neither positively nor negatively affects their final grade.
Extra Credit - Occasionally, there will be extra credit questions on a test, but it is not guaranteed for every test. In general, no other extra credit is given in Science. I am a firm believer that if students stay focused and updated on their assignments and studies, and ask for help when needed, they will succeed in my class!
Parents, and more importantly, students are encouraged to check on their grades weekly to ensure accuracy. The quicker a student or parents notices or questions a possible mistake in a grade, the easier it is to fix. Students are encouraged to keep all Science homework and classwork in case a grade is mistakenly entered or not entered. Students must keep all assignments in their science notebooks, this helps the student to stay organized and to better study. Also, if a student is missing a grade in the gradebook, they must show that assignment from their notebook that is graded for the mistake to be corrected.
